Elkhorn man faces second motor-vehicle-homicide charge after fatal Omaha crash

An Elkhorn man faces an expanded criminal case after both children injured in a July 9 crash in Omaha died, according to local reports.

Tanner Hunt, 28, was identified in reports as being from Elkhorn. The crash did not occur in Elkhorn; it happened near 114th Street and West Center Road in Omaha.

Second child’s death led to added homicide charge

The victims were brothers Prestin Strassenburg, 10, and Zaiden Strassenburg, 5. Omaha police confirmed Prestin’s death after the crash and Zaiden’s death on July 15, according to reports.

Local reports said prosecutors filed a second motor-vehicle-homicide count after Zaiden died. The charge is an accusation, not a conviction, and the case remains pending.

Separate misdemeanor case carries $25,000 bond

A separate criminal case includes misdemeanor allegations of having no proof of insurance, driving with a revoked license and refusing to submit to a blood, breath or urine test. Reports said that case carries a $25,000 bond.

Hunt remains held in the primary case on a reported $10 million bond. If released, he would be subject to GPS monitoring and a 24-hour sobriety program, according to the initial court-appearance report.

August 17 court settings

The primary case has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 17, 2026, according to WOWT‘s July 13 court report. The separate misdemeanor case has a trial set for the same date, according to later reporting.

According to court documents and statements attributed to prosecutors and police, investigators allege Hunt was driving east on West Center Road at excessive speed and weaving through traffic. WOWT reported that court documents placed his vehicle at about 98 mph one second before the collision. Reports also said a hospital blood-alcohol reading was .095, Hunt told authorities he had taken Adderall earlier that day, and he refused to provide blood or urine samples after a warrant was issued.

Hunt was initially charged with motor-vehicle homicide and driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury. Prosecutors later said they expected to upgrade those charges, but the July 16 report stated that no such upgrade had yet been filed at that time.

Hunt is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
