French Quarter incident: underground transformer fire led to a separate outage

Separately from the broader storm-related outages, a French Quarter underground transformer fire triggered an outage late Saturday night. Audacy/WWL reported it happened at 10:36 p.m. near the corner of Conti and Bourbon Streets, affecting parts of the Vieux Carré (from Rampart to Decatur streets, and from Iberville to Bienville). Mayor Helena Moreno said officials evacuated the Royal Sonesta hotel, and Entergy reported an outage impacting approximately 900 customers.

Entergy said the cause remained under investigation and was believed to be related to a fire beneath an underground vault. Audacy/WWL and WBRZ also reported an unexpected safety complication during restoration: threats from a gunman/individual that prompted an NOPD response and delayed restoration. Later reporting said power was restored.
