Everett Daily Brief: Code Changes Take Effect, Cold Weather Shelter Opens, Apartment Fire Update
Everett, WA — February 6, 2026 — City code updates take effect today, a temporary cold weather shelter opens, and crews investigate a recent apartment fire.
City Code Updates Take Effect
Several updates to Everett’s development and planning code officially take effect today, February 6. City leaders describe the changes as technical and clarifying, aimed at tightening language and correcting minor inconsistencies following the broader Everett 2044 plan adopted last year.
While the amendments don’t dramatically change zoning rules, they are expected to streamline permitting and reduce confusion for builders, homeowners, and city staff. Additional cleanup measures are anticipated later this year as the city continues reviewing long-term growth policies.
Cold Weather Shelter Expands Capacity
As overnight temperatures remain low, Everett has opened an additional temporary cold weather shelter on Cedar Street. The site adds roughly 30 beds and is designed to relieve pressure on existing shelters during extended cold spells.
The shelter allows pets and is scheduled to remain open through mid-February. City officials are urging residents to call the non-emergency line if they’re concerned about someone sleeping outdoors in freezing conditions.
Apartment Fire Investigation Ongoing
Fire officials continue investigating a recent apartment fire that displaced several residents earlier this week. One adult was treated for smoke inhalation, and no firefighter injuries were reported.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire started near a wood-burning fireplace, with combustible items placed too close to the heat source. Fire crews used drone technology during the response to improve coordination and situational awareness.
USPS Facility Tour Announced
The U.S. Postal Service has announced a media and community tour of its new Everett Sorting and Delivery Center, scheduled for February 11. The upgraded facility features modern package-sorting equipment and next-generation delivery vehicles.
Postal officials say customers will not see changes to local post office services, but the facility is expected to improve delivery efficiency across the region.
