Utility bills: electric rates set to rise
Fayetteville’s Public Works Commission approved new electric rates and fees after a public hearing on February 25. The updated rates apply to bills sent on or after May 1, 2026, while some fees take effect immediately.
PWC said the change is intended to keep pace with rising costs over the next two years, including purchased power, capital project debt service, and operating expenses. For a household using about 1,000 kWh a month, PWC projected the bill impact at about $8.02 starting in May 2026, with another increase of about $8.59 in May 2027.
Streets: no-parking petition plan denied
Fayetteville City Council rejected a proposal that would have let neighbors request no-parking zones in residential multi-use lanes through a petition-style process. The vote was 9 to 1, with the mayor casting the lone vote in favor.
Under the proposal, residents on a block could have asked the city to ban parking in multi-use lanes if 70% of neighbors agreed. Council members raised concerns about unintended impacts, including parking availability, property value worries, and the risk of turning routine traffic issues into neighborhood conflicts. For now, requests still move through the existing path of staff review and a full council vote.
Community: March 7 cleanup day
Cumberland County Solid Waste Management is organizing a litter pickup on Saturday, March 7 at 9 a.m., with volunteers meeting at 575 Assembly Court. The county says volunteers can register in advance and will receive a supply bag with cleanup and safety items, and staff will haul away filled bags.
