It is a busy weekend in the capital city, with kids, families and small businesses all in the spotlight as lawmakers work through the 2026 session.

Military Kids Day returns to the Capitol

The Kentucky Senate is again inviting children from military families to Military Kids Day on Thursday, Feb. 19, on the Capitol campus in Frankfort. The day includes educational activities, recognition in the Senate chamber and time with state leaders. citeturn2search3

The tradition, launched by Sen. Jimmy Higdon, is meant to honor the sacrifices of children and grandchildren of service members and veterans. Capacity this year is limited to 150 young participants, so organizers are urging families to register early to secure a spot. citeturn2search3

Senate backs stricter rules on massage businesses

In other action at the Capitol, senators have approved a bill aimed at curbing human trafficking by tightening oversight of massage businesses. Senate Bill 132 would make it clearer that cities can set local rules for licensing, zoning, inspections and operating hours. citeturn2search9

The bill also increases penalties for operating without a proper license. Supporters say the goal is to give local governments more tools to shut down businesses that may be fronts for trafficking, while allowing legitimate massage therapists to continue to operate. citeturn2search9

Governor highlights economy, weather response and health

From the executive branch, the Governor used a Thursday briefing to highlight new economic development wins, progress on winter storm response and a statewide drop in unemployment across all 120 counties. citeturn1search9

State leaders also pointed to efforts to expand early childhood education, implement the new medical cannabis program and support public safety through recent Kentucky State Police graduates. Tonight: Downtown Chocolate Stroll

Closer to home, downtown merchants are preparing for the DFI Chocolate Stroll this evening. The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Capital City Museum and Historic Sites, with a free shuttle running through downtown until 8 p.m. citeturn0search4turn0search2

Participants can sample sweets from local businesses, including special treats from a well-known candy maker, as they move between shops, restaurants and bars. This year’s theme, “Chocolate and Sparkle,” invites guests to wear their sparkliest outfits while enjoying live music and a festive winter night out along the riverfront. citeturn0search2
