Galesburg Daily Brief: Arts, Business, and City Hall
Good morning, Galesburg. Here is a quick look at what has been happening around town and what is coming up as the new week gets started.
Glow-in-the-dark art brings families downtown
Thursday night’s glow-in-the-dark art event on East Main Street turned a winter evening into a bright family outing. Kids and adults rotated between painting T-shirts, adding color to a shared canvas, and assembling glowing paper crafts under black lights.
Organizers kept the focus on low-cost, hands-on fun, with a small entry fee and free access for families using local kids’ passes. A weather backup date is set for later this month, but the main event went ahead as planned, giving downtown a midwinter boost in foot traffic.
Business community readies for Sunrise Leadership Breakfast
Local employers and entrepreneurs are looking ahead to Wednesday’s Sunrise Leadership Breakfast at the Sandburg Science and Technology Atrium. The early-morning gathering will mix networking time with short remarks on regional economic trends and the year ahead for the business community.
Doors will open before sunrise for coffee and conversation, followed by a program focused on collaboration, leadership, and celebrating recent accomplishments. Organizers are encouraging attendees to arrive a little early to allow time for check-in and parking on the Carl Sandburg College campus.
New representative for Ward 3 on the city council
At the start of the week, city leaders filled the open Ward 3 seat on the city council. Council members unanimously backed the appointment of Chuck Reynolds, a lifelong resident who grew up on the west side and attended local schools.
Reynolds steps in for former council member Evan Miller, who resigned after moving outside city limits. The new council member has a background in the private sector and was praised by city leaders as a steady addition at the table. Ward 3 residents can expect to see him at neighborhood meetings and public hearings as the council works through this year’s budget and policy debates.
Coming up this week
- Watch for follow-up family programs downtown later this month, including another potential glow-themed art night if winter weather cooperates.
- Business owners planning to attend the Sunrise Leadership Breakfast on Wednesday should confirm their plans and think about bringing a colleague or mentee.
