Geneva reopens West Main Street to two-way traffic after major infrastructure work

West Main Street in Geneva reopened to two-way traffic at 3:14 p.m. on May 26, restoring more normal travel through an area that has been under construction. The City of Geneva described the reopening as unofficial and said final work remained on the infrastructure project.

The change allows motorists to use West Main Street in both directions again. It also gives residents and businesses more direct access along the affected stretch, although drivers should still expect possible short-term changes near the Lockwood intersection.

Two-way traffic returns

Before the reopening, West Main Street operated with a westbound one-way restriction between Lockwood and West Street. The arrangement was used for residential and business traffic while construction continued.

Through traffic was directed to a posted detour during the construction period. The two-way reopening marks a major traffic milestone because drivers no longer need to rely on that detour to travel through the project area in both directions.

The city said the temporary westbound one-way restriction had resumed on April 13. That restriction remained part of the traffic pattern before the May 26 change, when regular two-way travel was restored.

Work continues near Lockwood

The project includes waterline work at the Lockwood intersection. That work is one reason traffic conditions may still change even after West Main Street reopened to two-way travel.

In a June 2 update, the city said contractors still had punch-list items to complete. It also warned that small traffic interruptions could continue while those remaining tasks were addressed.

Geneva has characterized the West Main Street project as a major, transformational infrastructure project. The traffic reopening represents substantial progress, but it does not establish that every construction task has been completed.

For motorists, the practical change is immediate: West Main Street is available in both directions rather than operating under the earlier westbound restriction. For people who live or operate businesses near the work zone, access is more normal, but brief interruptions remain possible as crews finish the project.

The city’s public update does not identify a final completion date, every remaining punch-list item or the precise duration of the waterline work at Lockwood. Until the remaining work is finished, drivers should remain alert for temporary traffic changes near the intersection.
