Greenwood District 50 puts $175 million school-bond question on November ballot
Greenwood School District 50 trustees have authorized a proposed general-obligation bond referendum of up to $175 million for the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot, giving voters the next decision on a major package of school construction and renovation projects.
The Board of Trustees approved the resolution on June 18, 2026. The proposal is not final: the bonds would be issued only if voters approve the referendum. As of Aug. 7, the question had been authorized but had not yet been decided by Greenwood voters.
What the proposal would fund
According to the districtโs announcement, the proposed bonds would address facility needs, student learning environments, school safety, transportation and capacity for future enrollment growth. Those purposes could affect students and families who use District 50 schools, as well as taxpayers who will decide whether to authorize the borrowing.
The approved materials do not provide a projected millage impact or a debt-service schedule. That means the specific effect on property-tax bills cannot be stated from the information available in this source packet. The proposal should therefore be understood as an authorization question, not as a confirmed tax increase or a guarantee that every project will be built.
Projects already identified
A separate construction-management solicitation issued June 11 shows some of the work under consideration. The solicitation covered five school projects, including new construction for Mays Elementary and renovations at Rice Elementary and Hodges Elementary.
Contractorsโ proposals for that solicitation were due July 7, 2026. The solicitation identifies Greenwood, SC, as the project location. Its existence indicates that the district has begun seeking construction-management services, but it does not change the status of the bond question or guarantee construction before voter approval.
Budget approved separately
The district also approved a balanced 2026-27 budget, effective July 1, 2026. That budget action is separate from the proposed bond referendum. The bond question concerns authorization for up to $175 million in general-obligation borrowing for capital projects, while the approved materials do not identify the referendum as part of the districtโs operating-budget decision.
The next major date for residents is Nov. 3, 2026, when Greenwood voters are scheduled to decide whether District 50 may issue up to $175 million in bonds. Until that vote, the projects remain proposed and the financial impact remains unspecified in the district information reviewed for this report.
