High-Rise Vote, Trop Redevelopment and Budget Input Shape St. Pete’s Week
St. Petersburg, FL – April 3, 2026 – A 21-story tower advances, Trop redevelopment moves ahead, and residents are invited to weigh in on next year’s city budget.
It’s been a consequential week at City Hall, with major decisions and long-range plans taking shape across St. Petersburg.
21-Story Downtown Tower Moves Forward
After hours of public comment and debate, City Council allowed a proposed 21-story apartment tower known as The Pelican to proceed in the Uptown area near Fifth Avenue North. The project includes roughly 370 units and replaces several older structures.
Opponents argued the building’s scale clashes with the surrounding neighborhood and raised concerns about historic preservation and displacement. Supporters maintained the proposal complies with current zoning rules. As part of the approval, the developer agreed to contribute $1.5 million to the city’s affordable housing trust fund and additional funding for public art and design elements.
Gas Plant District Redevelopment Advances
The city’s long-awaited redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District also moved forward. Staff recommended that four development teams advance in the selection process to transform the 86-acre Tropicana Field site.
Proposals under review include plans for housing, retail, open space and job-generating commercial uses. City officials evaluated each bid based on public benefit, economic impact, housing commitments and feasibility. The redevelopment is expected to shape downtown growth and address long-standing equity and housing goals.
Residents Invited to Weigh In on FY2027 Budget
Looking ahead, city leaders are inviting residents to help shape the fiscal year 2027 budget. A public Budget Open House is scheduled for April 13 at City Hall, offering residents a chance to review spending priorities and share feedback.
With major capital projects, housing investments and infrastructure needs on the horizon, city officials say community input will help guide funding decisions in the months ahead.
