Homelessness Progress, Storm Threat, and Tournament Action Lead Indy Headlines
Indianapolis, IN – March 9, 2026 – City homelessness efforts show gains as storms loom and college basketball tournaments draw crowds downtown.
It’s a busy Monday across Indianapolis, with city leaders touting progress on homelessness, forecasters warning of more rain, and basketball fans filling downtown arenas.
Streets to Home Program Shows Early Results
City officials and leaders from the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention shared a new update on the Streets to Home Indy initiative. Since launching six months ago, the program has helped 114 people move from encampments into stable housing as of March 3.
Participants are being connected to health care, mental health services, and case management. The update comes as Indianapolis’ most recent point-in-time count recorded 1,815 unhoused residents in 2025, marking the second straight annual increase. Organizers say they are working to secure final funding to meet summer goals, especially ahead of a statewide camping ban set to take effect in July.
Warm Today, Storms and Flood Risk Midweek
After a stretch of sunshine and unusually warm temperatures, rain chances are returning. The National Weather Service says patchy drizzle is possible late Monday into Tuesday, with stronger showers and thunderstorms expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
Forecasters warn additional rainfall could worsen ongoing flooding in low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to use caution on slick roads and monitor local advisories as conditions evolve.
College Hoops Take Over Downtown
March basketball is in full swing in Indianapolis. The Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament wrapped up at Gainbridge Fieldhouse this weekend, drawing teams and fans from across the conference.
Meanwhile, Horizon League tournament play continues at Corteva Coliseum. On Sunday, Purdue Fort Wayne rolled past IU Indianapolis in the women’s bracket, adding to the postseason energy building across the city as Indy prepares for even more major college basketball events in the weeks ahead.
