Housing, Environment and Transportation Updates Lead Late-March Agenda in Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem, NC – March 31, 2026 – Housing redevelopment advances, Creek Week wraps, and new rental listings signal market pressure.
Winston-Salem is closing out March with movement on housing, environmental engagement, and long-term transportation upgrades.
Choice Neighborhood Phase Moves Forward
Construction continues in the Cleveland Avenue area as part of the federally backed Choice Neighborhood initiative. The multi-phase effort, led by the city and the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem, aims to replace aging public housing with more than 400 mixed-income units.
The redevelopment represents more than $100 million in planned investment and is expected to generate local construction jobs while expanding affordable housing options. Phase 1 vertical construction is now underway, marking a visible shift from planning to buildout.
Creek Week Highlights Environmental Focus
Forsyth Creek Week wrapped up March 29 after nine days of cleanups, educational events, and volunteer activities across the city. Organized in partnership with local groups and the City of Winston-Salem, the annual initiative promotes water quality awareness and stream stewardship.
City officials have increasingly tied environmental programming like Creek Week to broader resilience planning, including stormwater management and greenway expansion.
Rental Listings Reflect Market Strain
New rental listings posted this week show three-bedroom apartments approaching the mid-$1,600 range in parts of the city. Housing analysts continue to note that households spending more than 30 percent of income on rent are considered cost-burdened.
With redevelopment projects underway but demand remaining steady, affordability remains a central issue for city leaders heading into upcoming budget discussions.
Northern Beltway Work Continues
Meanwhile, work on the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway is progressing, with additional southern extensions underway in early 2026. State transportation officials have said the full corridor will improve freight mobility and reduce congestion on existing routes once completed.
For residents, the project represents one of the region’s most significant long-term infrastructure investments.
