Winston-Salem landfill access limited by U.S. 52 work July 31-Aug. 2
Access to Winston-Salem’s Hanes Mill Road Solid Waste Facility will be limited July 31-Aug. 2 as U.S. 52 bridge and ramp work redirects drivers.
Access to Winston-Salem’s Hanes Mill Road Solid Waste Facility will be limited from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 2, while an NCDOT contractor closes the Hanes Mill Road bridge and nearby U.S. 52 ramps.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Friday and is expected to continue until noon Sunday, weather permitting. The City of Winston-Salem says detours will be posted and advises motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
What is closing
The work affects the Hanes Mill Road bridge and ramps at U.S. 52. Because those routes provide access to the Hanes Mill Road Solid Waste Facility, drivers heading to the site should expect restricted or slower access during the construction window.
The city alert describes limited access to the facility. It does not announce that the facility itself will be fully closed, and it does not identify another facility as a substitute.
Residents, contractors, commercial haulers and other drivers should allow extra time, watch for posted detour signs and consider postponing nonessential trips to the area. Conditions may change if weather or construction circumstances affect the schedule.
Facility hours and travel planning
The Hanes Mill Road Solid Waste Facility is located at 325 W. Hanes Mill Road in Winston-Salem. Its published normal hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Those regular hours do not mean service will be fully accessible during the bridge and ramp closures. Drivers should verify conditions before leaving and should not assume that a normal operating hour guarantees an uninterrupted route to the facility.
For current traffic information, motorists can check NCDOT’s DriveNC system before traveling. Drivers should follow posted signs in the area rather than relying on an assumed detour route.
Part of a larger widening project
The weekend closure is part of the broader Hanes Mill Road and U.S. 52 widening project in northern Winston-Salem. NCDOT describes the project as a $24 million effort that includes bridge construction work.
The project’s contract schedule calls for completion in May 2027. That date is a target in the construction contract, not a guarantee that every part of the work will be finished by then.
For the immediate closure, the key issue is access: the Hanes Mill Road facility may remain open under its normal schedule, but reaching it could be more difficult from Friday morning through Sunday midday. Drivers should check for updates before making the trip, especially if rain or other construction conditions change the expected end time.
