Houston police are investigating a fatal shooting reported early Monday at an apartment complex near South Gessner. Officers say the victim was found with a gunshot wound and later died at a hospital, and a suspect was reported to have left in a gray Jeep.

Travel and crowd watch

Airports at Bush and Hobby are gearing up for a busy spring-break stretch from March 5–16, with passenger volumes expected to rise. Officials are urging travelers to plan extra time, especially with a partial federal government shutdown raising the possibility of longer security lines and reduced staffing.

Rodeo season is also in full swing, bringing additional traffic around NRG Park and downtown after the annual parade rolled through the city over the weekend.

School safety near rail lines

The city is moving ahead with a new pedestrian bridge near Milby High School, a project aimed at improving safety around heavy rail traffic in the East End. Construction is expected to start in June, and the crossing is planned to be named in honor of a student killed near the tracks in 2024.

At the same time, a separate pedestrian-bridge effort tied to McReynolds Middle School has been canceled following plans to close that campus, a decision that has kept school-closure fallout in the spotlight.

Drivers should also watch for a week of closures and detours along portions of Beltway 8 southeast of Houston. The round-the-clock work is expected to affect commutes through early next week, so checking routes before heading out may save time.
