Houston Fourth of July means downtown closures, parking limits and transit
Freedom Over Texas, Astros holiday events and FIFA Fan Fest are packing downtown Houston, with city closures, parking limits and METRO detours through July 5.
Downtown Houston’s Fourth of July traffic squeeze is here. Freedom Over Texas returns to Eleanor Tinsley Park on Saturday, July 4, and the city says the celebration brings live music, family activities and fireworks over Buffalo Bayou. The Astros’ holiday Street Fest at Daikin Park and FIFA Fan Fest are also adding to the same downtown crowd.
The city’s street-closure sheet shows parking restrictions starting June 25 and additional no-parking signs from June 30 through July 5. On Saturday, July 4, closures include Bagby northbound at Dallas, Lamar between Smith and Bagby, Brazos at Dallas, Bagby southbound at Rusk, and Sabine Street between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive during the fireworks window. The Buffalo Bayou Waterway is also set to close from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. between the Capitol Street Bridge and Montrose Boulevard/Studemont Street.
Transit is the cleaner bet
METRO says its World Cup service runs from June 7 through July 11 with extra service and more frequent routes, and its Park & Ride routes listed for downtown operate seven days a week during that span. If you have to cross downtown, do it early and expect delays.
