1) Cinco de Mayo parade called off
Organizers behind Houston’s annual Cinco de Mayo parade have canceled this year’s event, citing concerns that heightened immigration enforcement activity could put families and participants at risk. The decision is already stirring debate in the community about safety, visibility, and whether a large public celebration can be held without people fearing they’ll be targeted.
2) HPD investigates fatal apartment-complex shooting
Police are investigating the killing of a 26-year-old man who was found shot in the breezeway of an apartment complex in the 7800 block of Country Place Drive on Wednesday evening, Feb. 26. Detectives said witnesses reported seeing two or three suspects in the area shortly before the shooting. Anyone with information is being asked to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
3) Rodeo weekend gets rolling across NRG Park
Rodeo season is arriving fast, with the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest running Feb. 26–28 and the main livestock show and rodeo set to begin Monday, March 2. If you’re heading out this weekend, expect crowds, limited parking, and lots of pre-rodeo activity. Tickets, public access areas, and transportation options are front-and-center in planning guidance.
4) World Cup legacy plan: new soccer fields and youth scholarships
With Houston set to host 2026 World Cup matches, the local host committee has rolled out a community program aimed at long-term impact: renovations or new construction for dozens of full-size soccer fields in Harris County parks, plus roughly $1.5 million in scholarships intended to help more kids access organized soccer. Work is reported as underway at multiple park sites across the county.
