Icy Riverfront Conditions, Scam Warning, and a New Business Opening
Charleston, WV — February 6, 2026 — Icy sidewalks linger downtown, officials warn of a texting scam, and a new tire shop opens nearby.
Winter Hazards Linger Downtown
Charleston continues to deal with the aftereffects of this week’s winter weather, particularly along the Kanawha River and in the downtown core. While primary roads have largely been cleared, ice remains a major concern on sidewalks, riverfront paths, and neighborhood streets.
Emergency officials say changing conditions could make travel worse as additional precipitation moves in. Residents are being urged to use caution when walking or driving, especially in shaded areas where ice is slower to melt.
State and County Warn of Texting Scam
Local law enforcement and the state attorney general’s office are alerting residents to a surge in scam text messages reported over the past day. The messages often claim accounts are in danger of suspension and direct recipients to click suspicious links.
Officials stress that legitimate agencies and companies do not request personal information through unsolicited texts. Anyone receiving these messages is advised not to click links and to delete the texts immediately.
New Tire Store Opens in South Charleston
On a more routine note, a national tire retailer has opened its first location in South Charleston, adding a new option for drivers in Kanawha County. The store is located near major retail outlets and is expected to serve both commuters and local residents.
The opening comes at a busy time, as winter road conditions have increased demand for tire repairs and replacements across the region.
Looking Ahead
Between lingering winter hazards and ongoing scam activity, city and county officials say awareness remains key heading into the weekend. Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, watch for updates, and look out for one another.
