Indio Breaks Ground on $45 Million Police Headquarters
Indio has begun construction on a new $45 million police headquarters, moving the final major component of the city’s Public Safety Campus into the building phase.
City leaders, police officials and community members gathered in Indio on June 25, 2026, for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of work. Construction was underway as of the ceremony, according to the city and KESQ.
The headquarters is expected to replace the Indio Police Department’s existing facility and become the central hub for police operations and community engagement. The city expects the building to open in late 2027 or early 2028.
What the headquarters will include
Planned features include updated workspaces, training areas, interview rooms, meeting rooms, community spaces and updated technology. The design is intended to bring police operations, employee training and public-facing functions together in one facility.
The new building is also planned to expand the department’s operational, training and community-facing capacity. Those are intended capabilities of the project; the June groundbreaking marked the beginning of construction rather than the completion of the facility.
For residents, the project’s most direct change will come when police operations eventually move from the current headquarters into the new building. The available public descriptions focus on the facility’s design and planned uses, rather than promising a specific change in police response times.
Final major piece of the Public Safety Campus
The headquarters is part of Indio’s broader Public Safety Campus. The campus already includes a completed fire station, dispatch center and public safety services building, according to the city.
That makes the police headquarters the campus’s final major component. The project gives the city a multiyear construction timeline for completing the site’s planned public safety facilities, with the police headquarters carrying the largest remaining construction milestone described in the city’s announcement.
The $45 million cost makes the headquarters a major city investment in police infrastructure. Its practical effect will depend on construction progress, the finished building and the eventual transition from the existing facility.
Next construction milestone
The city’s published schedule calls for a beam-signing ceremony in fall 2026. A beam-signing event is a construction milestone held as a building’s structural work advances, before completion.
The city has described the overall completion schedule as winter 2027–2028. KESQ described the expected opening as late 2027 or early 2028. Both timelines place the opening at the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028, more than a year after the planned fall 2026 beam-signing event.
The next publicly identified step is therefore the fall 2026 beam-signing ceremony, followed by the remaining construction needed to complete the headquarters. Until the building is finished and the department moves in, the existing police facility remains the department’s operating location.
