Interchange Opens, State Tournaments Begin, ICE Contract Debate Grows in Aurora
Aurora is seeing a busy stretch of developments this week, from transportation upgrades to statewide athletic competitions and renewed immigration policy debate.
New I-70 Interchange Opens to Traffic
A newly completed diverging diamond interchange at Interstate 70 and Picadilly Road is now open, marking a significant traffic shift for drivers in northeast Aurora.
The redesigned intersection aims to improve safety and ease congestion in one of the city’s fastest-growing corridors. City and state transportation officials say the configuration reduces conflict points and keeps vehicles moving more efficiently during peak travel times.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down and follow posted signs as the community adjusts to the new traffic pattern.
Aurora Students Compete at State
Dozens of Aurora-area student-athletes are representing their schools at this year’s Class 5A state competitions.
In girls swimming, more than 50 individual qualifiers and 15 relay teams from local schools have advanced to the state meet. Meanwhile, wrestlers from across the city are competing in the 2026 state tournament brackets, capping off a strong winter season for Aurora programs.
For many athletes, simply reaching the state stage is a milestone moment after months of training and league competition.
Activists Urge Rejection of ICE Contract
Community activists are calling on Highlands REIT to reject a proposed contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement tied to the Hudson detention facility.
Advocates argue the agreement would expand federal detention operations in the region. Organizers have held rallies and public events urging corporate leaders to reconsider. The debate has drawn attention from Aurora residents concerned about the broader impact on immigrant families across the metro area.
Company representatives have not announced a final decision.
