IPS Budget Cuts, South Split Plan Advance as Downtown Hosts Major Events
Indianapolis, IN – March 22, 2026 – IPS plans deep cuts, leaders push a South Split cap, and downtown wraps a busy weekend of major events.
Indianapolis is heading into the final stretch of March with big conversations about schools, infrastructure and a packed downtown calendar.
IPS weighs major budget cuts
Indianapolis Public Schools is preparing for significant reductions as it works to close a projected funding gap that could top $40 million. District leaders say about $7 million will be trimmed directly from school budgets next year, with additional adjustments under review.
Administrators warn that without changes, reserves could be depleted within a year. The move has sparked concern among families and educators who worry about staffing levels and classroom resources.
South Split ‘lid’ proposal gains momentum
City leaders and business groups are advancing a long-discussed plan to place a cap, or ‘lid,’ over portions of the I-65/I-70 South Split near downtown. Supporters say the project could reconnect neighborhoods, create new green space and open land for development.
A newly released planning study outlines early concepts for transforming the corridor’s edges into a more walkable gateway to the city’s southeast side. Funding and a construction timeline remain open questions.
Downtown wraps busy sports weekend
Indianapolis also hosted a wave of visitors this weekend as major basketball tournaments and youth volleyball events filled venues across the city.
The 2026 NIT semifinals are set for Hinkle Fieldhouse, with the championship game scheduled at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. At the same time, the Nike Mideast Volleyball Qualifier brought thousands of athletes and families to the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium.
City tourism officials say March continues to be one of the most economically impactful months of the year, with large-scale sports events driving hotel stays and restaurant traffic.
