Jersey City Daily: Transitional aid vote, Steel Tech housing plan, and post-blizzard status
Jersey City, NJ – February 26, 2026 – Council moves toward a major state aid bid as storm cleanup continues and a new housing plan surfaces.
City Hall: Council backs transitional aid application
Jersey City leaders voted 9-0 to move forward with a state transitional aid application that officials said could total more than $100 million. The measure authorizes the administration to submit the application by the stated deadline of February 27, 2026, as the city wrestles with a reported structural budget gap.
Transitional aid is typically paired with tighter state oversight. City officials discussed the possibility of a state monitor reviewing major financial actions, and the administration described the effort as part of a multi-year plan aimed at stabilizing the budget without cutting core services.
Development: New plan surfaces for Steel Tech site
A fresh redevelopment concept is emerging for the former Steel Technologies property at 417 Communipaw Avenue. The new idea, described as a 372-unit plan, follows the redevelopment agency’s move to terminate a prior agreement for the 3.3-acre site near Berry Lane Park. The earlier project had included a wider mix of amenities, and the next proposal appears to narrow the scope while keeping new housing on the table.
Post-blizzard operations: Services mostly back, but street sweeping paused
The city’s emergency management page said the blizzard warning has expired and listed most day-to-day services as back to normal, including public schools, garbage collection, and city offices. Street sweeping, however, was listed as suspended indefinitely as crews continue cleanup and snow removal work.
- Reminder: property owners are required to clear sidewalks and curb areas after snowfall.
- If you used temporary public parking during the storm, the city urged residents to move vehicles back off those spaces.
Campus note
New Jersey City University kept learning and work fully remote on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, citing unsafe travel conditions. The university said dining would operate on limited hours and shuttles could be disrupted depending on roadway cleanup.
