Jones Creek Landing Dock Remains Closed as VDOT Develops New Richmond County Schedule
The Jones Creek Landing dock near Warsaw remains closed, and VDOT has not published a replacement construction start date or reopening date.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says the project remains active and funded, with design complete. However, VDOT’s current project page lists both the construction and completion schedules as under development. The previously scheduled July 2026 construction start and anticipated September 2026 opening should not be treated as current commitments.
Dock remains closed for safety
Jones Creek Landing is at the end of Route 638, also known as Jones Creek Road, on the Rappahannock River in Richmond County. Warsaw is the selected local market for this report, but the physical project is in the surrounding Richmond County service area.
The dock was built in 1932 and is owned and maintained by VDOT, not the Town of Warsaw or Richmond County. VDOT closed it on July 18, 2023, after an underwater inspection determined that closure was necessary for public safety. Signs and fencing remain in place to prevent pedestrians from using the structure.
Replacement design is complete
VDOT estimates the replacement project will cost $300,000. The new dock is planned to be similar in size to the existing structure, with a kayak launch added on the downstream side.
In its May 15, 2026 construction schedule update, VDOT said the project remained active and funded and that the designs were complete. The agency said it would announce new construction dates when a revised schedule became available.
VDOT’s project page, last updated June 30, 2026, lists the estimated start date and estimated completion date as “Construction schedule under development.” VDOT’s schedule notice was last updated July 31, 2026. As of August 2, 2026, the agency has not published a replacement start date or opening date.
What the closure means for Warsaw-area users
Richmond County says its public access points support activities including boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The county identifies Totuskey Public Landing, Carter’s Wharf Landing, Farnham Creek Landing and Simonson Boat Ramp among its public boating and fishing access points.
Those locations are relevant alternatives for Warsaw-area residents and recreational users while Jones Creek Landing is unavailable. The county’s recreation page provides general public-water-access context; it does not indicate that Jones Creek Landing itself is open.
What to watch next
The next material update will be VDOT’s publication of revised construction and completion dates. Until then, the landing remains closed, with signs and fencing in place.
The replacement has not been canceled or defunded. It remains an active, funded project with completed design work, but VDOT has not promised a new construction timeline or reopening date.
