Kalamazoo approves more than $19 million in water, sewer work
The Kalamazoo City Commission approved more than $19 million in contracts and agreements for water and wastewater work at its July 20, 2026, meeting, committing funding to treatment-plant reliability, water-main replacement, water meters and sewer-system rehabilitation.
The actions cover separate projects rather than one construction contract. Together, they reach across major parts of the city’s water and wastewater infrastructure, from electrical systems at Treatment Plant No. 25 to a water main on Burdick Street.
Electrical reliability is the largest project
The largest approval was an $11,227,000 contract for the Treatment Plant No. 25 Electrical Reliability Project. The action is focused on electrical reliability at the city’s treatment facilities, making it the largest single item in the package.
The commission also approved $1.5 million for secondary-clarifier rehabilitation design engineering. That approval is for design engineering connected to the rehabilitation project, not a statement that the rehabilitation itself has been completed.
Additional wastewater-related actions include $135,100 for a raw-sewage force-main condition assessment and $301,405 for manhole rehabilitation. The approvals address assessment and repair work involving separate parts of the sewer system.
Burdick Street water-main replacement
Commissioners approved a $2,577,774 contract for the Burdick Street water-main replacement project. The approved section runs from Emerson to Stockbridge, identifying a specific corridor where the city plans to replace water infrastructure.
The commission also approved a $3,038,791 contract for the 2026 Water Meter Replacement Project. The action summary identifies the project and its contract amount but does not state how many meters are included.
The six specifically identified amounts total $18,780,070. The City of Kalamazoo describes the broader approved package as more than $19 million, covering the listed water and wastewater actions and related approvals.
What the vote changes
The July 20 vote gives the city approval to proceed with a group of contracts, design work, condition assessment and rehabilitation projects. It does not mean every project is finished. The work involves different facilities and types of infrastructure, so the vote represents a set of actions rather than a single construction effort.
For Kalamazoo residents, the approved spending is aimed at maintaining and improving systems that support water service and wastewater operations.
