Kansas City Council approves $456,000 FAA grant for KCI vehicle-tracking equipment
The Kansas City Council approved acceptance of a $456,000 Federal Aviation Administration grant for Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters for airport-owned vehicles at Kansas City International Airport.
The council passed Ordinance 260863 on September 10, 2026. The ordinance estimates the grant revenue in the KCI Other Grants account within the city’s Aviation Fund and authorizes the city manager to accept the federal Airport Improvement Program grant.
Grant is designated for airport vehicles
The ordinance identifies the grant as FAA grant 3-29-0040-106-2026. Its stated purpose is to provide funds to acquire Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters, or VMATs, for airport-owned vehicles at KCI.
The action is an authorization to accept federal grant revenue. It is not described as a new city-funded airport construction project or a general-fund expenditure.
The ordinance does not specify how many transmitters will be acquired, which vendor would supply them, when procurement will occur or when the equipment will be deployed.
City has until September 16 to execute grant
The ordinance says the FAA grant must be accepted and executed by September 16, 2026. That deadline is separate from the council’s approval four days earlier, on September 10.
The council meeting record shows that the measure passed after the charter requirement was waived and the ordinance was advanced for consideration.
FAA program provides airport funding
The FAA’s Airport Improvement Program provides funding for eligible infrastructure and other improvements at public-use airports. That federal program information supplies general context; the Kansas City ordinance establishes the local grant amount, grant number and equipment purpose.
The public record does not say that the transmitters will change passenger service, reduce delays or alter airport security. The documented local purpose is equipment for airport-owned vehicle operations at KCI.
