Kentwood schools begin work on $125.33 million bond plan
Kentwood Public Schools is moving into implementation of a voter-approved $125.33 million facilities bond that will shape school construction, renovations and operations in the years ahead.
Voters approved the bond request on May 5, 2026. The plan funds a new Valleywood Middle School, a performing-arts center at the East Kentwood High School Freshman Campus and restoration work at the Kentwood Ice Arena. It also includes technology, school safety and other facility improvements.
The bond is a Kentwood Public Schools initiative, not a city of Kentwood bond. Its approved amount was listed by the Kent County Clerk as not to exceed $125,330,000.
What the bond will fund
The largest named project is construction of a new Valleywood Middle School. The plan also calls for a new performing-arts center at the East Kentwood Freshman Campus, adding a major facility project to the district’s high school-area campus plans.
At the Kentwood Ice Arena, bond funding is designated for restoration. The overall package also covers technology and school-safety work, along with related facility improvements. The Kent County Clerk’s proposal listing identifies eligible uses that include buildings, safety, technology, buses and athletic facilities.
Those categories make the bond broader than a single construction project. The approved funding is intended to address both new facilities and improvements to existing district assets, while supporting equipment and safety-related needs.
Planning continues during the 2026–27 school year
The district’s next known step is implementation planning during the 2026–27 school year. Kentwood Public Schools says it plans to work with students, staff and families on a relocation plan during that period.
That planning matters because a new middle school and other facility work can affect where students learn, how staff and families navigate school changes, and how the district coordinates its operations. The approved sources identify the relocation planning, but they do not provide a final relocation schedule.
The available materials also do not fully detail a project-by-project cost allocation or the final construction schedule. The bond approval therefore establishes the funding authorization and project direction, while additional planning will determine how the work is sequenced and carried out.
A major public investment for the district
The $125.33 million bond represents a long-term public investment in Kentwood schools. It will affect facilities, construction planning, school operations and local taxpayers, although the accessible sources do not specify the bond’s final tax-rate effect.
The timeline from proposal to implementation moved quickly. The Kent County Clerk’s February 11, 2026, proposal document listed the bond and its not-to-exceed amount. The district’s bond FAQ, published May 1, provided planning and relocation information. Voters then approved the request May 5, and follow-up coverage on May 7 reported that the approval cleared the way for new construction and renovations.
For now, the confirmed change is the move from bond proposal to implementation planning. The next public-facing phase is the district’s work with students, staff and families during the 2026–27 school year, as Kentwood develops relocation plans and further details for the approved facilities program.
