Laredo’s World Trade Bridge expansion gets $25 million federal grant

Laredo’s planned World Trade Bridge expansion has received a $25 million FY 2026 federal BUILD grant, giving the project a major new funding commitment while leaving it short of the construction stage.

The grant was awarded to the City of Laredo and announced July 6, 2026. The proposed project is intended to expand commercial-traffic capacity at the World Trade Bridge, a major international crossing for the city’s trade and transportation economy.

What the proposed expansion includes

Under the current proposal, two southbound lanes would be added to the existing World Trade Bridge. A separate bridge built adjacent and parallel to the current span would provide eight northbound lanes.

TxDOT and the City of Laredo describe the proposed northbound span as approximately 1,479 feet long. The project area is estimated at approximately 29 acres and includes existing city right-of-way, new right-of-way and temporary construction easements.

The new northbound bridge would be built on right-of-way to be acquired by the City of Laredo. The project is proposed, however, and the grant is not a final authorization to begin construction. No construction timeline has been announced.

Environmental review and floodplain issues remain

TxDOT and City of Laredo notices say a draft environmental assessment was made available as part of the review process. The public-comment and public-hearing request deadline was April 21, 2026, and has passed.

The official project notices also state that the proposed work would involve an action in a floodplain. Environmental review, right-of-way acquisition and later project approvals remain part of the process before construction could begin.

The City of Laredo and TxDOT currently state that no residential or non-residential structures are anticipated to be displaced at this time. That expectation does not remove the need for right-of-way work across the proposed project area.

The grant does not cover the full project

The $25 million award is one funding component, not evidence that the entire bridge expansion has been financed. Local reporting on the grant announcement said additional funding will be required.

For residents, truck drivers, customs-related businesses and employers whose operations depend on the crossing, the immediate change is financial and procedural rather than physical: the project has secured federal support, but no lanes have been added and construction has not begun.

What Laredo should watch next

The next meaningful updates should come through City of Laredo and TxDOT records on environmental review, right-of-way acquisition, project financing and construction approvals, along with any additional federal funding announcements.

For now, the practical takeaway is limited but significant: Laredo has secured $25 million toward a proposed expansion that would add commercial lanes in both directions at the World Trade Bridge. The project remains in planning and review, and no start date has been announced.
