Recent Incidents in Las Cruces
Over the past 48 hours, Las Cruces has experienced several significant events, including multiple structure fires and a multi-vehicle crash, all coinciding with winter weather conditions.
Structure Fires
Between Tuesday and early Wednesday, three separate buildings caught fire within a 12-hour period. The first fire occurred just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the 800 block of South Main Street, where a small fire was found outside a motel. The second fire took place around 6 p.m. on the 3100 block of Executive Hills Road, resulting in flame and smoke damage to a house. A resident was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to the hospital. The third fire occurred on the 1900 block of South Telshor Boulevard on January 12, 2026, leading to the arrest of Richard Sepulveda, 47, who was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm (Molotov Cocktail). The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damages to the two-story apartment. Investigations into the causes of these fires are ongoing. Residents are urged to ensure their smoke detectors are functioning and to keep fire extinguishers readily available.
Multi-Vehicle Crash
On Wednesday evening, a multi-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Walton Boulevard. The incident resulted in injuries to seven individuals, including two pedestrians who sustained critical injuries. The crash involved a black Hyundai Palisade, which veered off course after the driver experienced a medical episode, leading to collisions with other vehicles and the pedestrians. The injured were transported to local medical facilities, and the driver was also hospitalized. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Weather Conditions
These incidents coincide with winter weather conditions in Las Cruces, including snow showers and temperatures ranging from 7°F to 25°F. Residents are advised to exercise caution during this period.
Community Events
Despite the recent events, the community remains active. The Mesilla Valley Balloon Rally, a free, family-friendly event, took place from January 16 to 19, 2026, featuring hot-air balloons, glow events, and high-flying traditions. The rally included a debut of the Visit Las Cruces hot air balloon, which will serve as a traveling ambassador for the city at future state and regional events.
