Las Vegas Daily: Stormy Skies, Airport Delays, and Housing Ideas
Las Vegas, NV — February 17, 2026 — Storms snarl travel, airport delays stack up, and new ideas for housing and the Arts District take shape across the valley.
Las Vegas, NV — February 17, 2026 — A stormy stretch is shaking up travel plans across the valley while local leaders push ahead on housing and arts-focused development.
Winter storms bring rain, wind and traffic headaches
Two back-to-back winter systems are moving through Southern Nevada, bringing gusty winds, steady rain in the valley and heavy snow in the Spring Mountains. Forecasters expect wind gusts up to around 50 mph, periods of moderate rain through tonight, and up to a couple of feet of snow above 7,000 feet in the surrounding ranges.
Drivers are being urged to leave extra time, slow down on wet roads and watch for reduced visibility, especially during the morning and evening commute windows. Mountain passes and higher-elevation roads could see slick and snowy conditions through midweek as the second storm lingers over the region.
Harry Reid International sees mounting delays
The unsettled weather is also disrupting air travel. A ground delay program at Harry Reid International Airport has pushed back dozens of arrivals and departures, with some waits approaching two hours. Airlines are adjusting schedules as conditions change, and officials are urging passengers to check flight status before heading to the terminal.
The combination of low clouds, rain and wind is expected to keep operations tight through at least late tonight. Travelers with tight connections or evening flights are most at risk of disruption as the storms move across the valley.
City explores new housing options, from artists’ units to tiny homes
Even as the weather grabs attention, longer-term housing conversations continue in Las Vegas. City officials recently opened the door to proposals for an affordable live–work project for artists on a city-owned site along Las Vegas Boulevard near the 18b Arts District. The goal is to pair below-market rents with studio-style housing that keeps working artists in the urban core.
Separately, regional developers and advocates are promoting small-footprint and tiny-home concepts as one way to add more attainable housing across the valley. Trade events and industry outreach at the convention center this year are expected to spotlight compact homes as an option for seniors, workers and creative communities looking to stay close to the city’s job centers.
