Leawood’s 83rd Street reconstruction shifts traffic again Aug. 11
A section of 83rd Street in Leawood is scheduled to close again Tuesday, Aug. 11, as the city moves the reconstruction project into its next phase.
The affected section runs between Lee Boulevard and State Line Road. It temporarily reopened to eastbound traffic July 29, but that reopening was scheduled to end Aug. 11 while construction continues.
The broader project extends along 83rd Street from State Line Road to Leawood’s western city limits. Construction began May 26, 2026, and is expected to continue through the fall before reaching the city’s overall completion target in December.
What is being built
The project includes full pavement replacement across the corridor, along with new curb and gutter. Crews are also upgrading traffic signals, work that will change parts of the street’s existing transportation infrastructure in addition to replacing the road surface.
Pedestrian improvements are part of the project as well. Plans call for an 8-foot sidewalk on the south side of 83rd Street and a 5-foot sidewalk on the north side. A pedestrian crossing with a rapid-flashing beacon is also included.
Those improvements put drivers, nearby residents, pedestrians and businesses in a corridor where access and travel conditions will change as crews move between roadway, signal and sidewalk work. People walking near the project will also encounter changing conditions while the sidewalks and crossing are constructed.
Fall construction timeline
Work between Leawood’s western city limits and North Wenonga Road is expected to finish in September, weather permitting. The section between North Wenonga Road and State Line Road is scheduled to remain in construction during October and November.
The City of Leawood anticipates completing the overall 83rd Street project by mid-December 2026. The schedule is weather permitting, so the listed milestones depend on conditions during the remaining work.
For people using the corridor, the immediate change is the scheduled end of the temporary eastbound reopening between Lee Boulevard and State Line Road on Aug. 11. The project’s next phases will continue to affect access along 83rd Street as pavement, traffic signals, curbs, sidewalks and the pedestrian crossing are completed.
