Major Development Projects in Lee’s Summit

Lee’s Summit is progressing with two significant initiatives that aim to reshape the city’s landscape and community engagement.

East Village Mixed-Use Development

The Lee’s Summit City Council has advanced a $481 million proposal to create an ‘East Village’ at the southeast corner of Highway 50 and Highway 291. This ambitious project includes new apartment complexes, townhomes, commercial spaces, and recreational areas with walking trails. A notable feature is the planned addition of a Costco store. Developers are seeking $111 million in tax incentives and plan to break ground in spring 2026. Mayor Bill Baird described the project as one of the most exciting the city has seen, emphasizing its central location in the community.

Partial Opt-Out of World Cup Alcohol Law

In response to Missouri’s new law allowing nearly round-the-clock alcohol service during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Lee’s Summit is considering a partial opt-out. The proposed ordinance would permit alcohol sales from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. on designated match and fan fest days, addressing public safety concerns associated with unrestricted service. Businesses interested in participating must apply for a special permit by June 5, 2026. The ordinance would be temporary, applying only to select dates during the World Cup.

Community Events and Safety

On January 31, 2026, Abundant Life Church hosted the A-Life Vision Gathering at their Lee’s Summit campus. The event focused on spiritual growth and community engagement, featuring worship, prayer, and activities for all ages. Additionally, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Strasbourg Apartments on January 27, 2025. The fire caused damage to the wall and ceiling spaces between two ground-floor apartments and two apartments on the second floor. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents from six apartments, while the other units in the building were cleared for reoccupation.

Sports Highlights

In local sports, the Lee’s Summit Tigers secured a 59-52 victory over the Lee’s Summit North Broncos in the Summit Grill Shootout boys’ basketball game on January 23, 2026. The Tigers’ win adds to their strong season performance, reflecting the competitive spirit of Lee’s Summit’s high school athletics.

Looking Ahead

These developments and events underscore Lee’s Summit’s commitment to growth, community engagement, and safety. Residents can look forward to new opportunities and enhancements in the coming months.
