Lexington heat warning keeps cooling centers and free LexTran rides open
Lexington KY – The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect through 9 p.m. Friday, July 3, and the city says cooling centers, community centers, discounted pools, and targeted free LexTran rides are available now.
Lexington is under an Extreme Heat Warning through 9 p.m. Friday, July 3, and the city has activated Phase 3 of its Extreme Heat Plan. For residents, the immediate question is where to cool off and what help is available while the warning is still active.
City guidance says partner organizations will operate cooling stations at Arbor Youth Services, Lexington Rescue Mission, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, New Life Day Center, New Vista Drop-In Center, Nathaniel Mission, and Recovery Café Lexington.
What Lexington is offering
Parks & Recreation is also offering half-off aquatic center admission and opening Dunbar, Castlewood, and Kenwick community centers as cooling spaces.
LexTran will provide free fixed-route rides to identified cooling stations for people experiencing homelessness. Outreach teams are also distributing supplies and helping people reach cooling stations and shaded spaces.
Who should take this seriously
The city says children, older adults, and people with medical conditions are especially vulnerable in extreme heat. It also warns that fans alone will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures are in the high 90s.
Anyone who feels dizzy, nauseated, confused, weak, or has other signs of heat illness should move to a cooler place and get medical help right away.
For now, Lexington residents should treat the warning as active through Friday evening and check official updates before heading out.
