Lexington, KY — February 17, 2026 — Here’s a quick look at what’s shaping local conversations today, from City Hall to neighborhood schools.
Council candidate faces felony assault charge
A candidate for Lexington’s 9th District Urban County Council seat is facing a serious legal hurdle after being arrested on a second-degree assault charge late last week. Jail records show 69-year-old Matt Eugene Miniard was taken into custody Friday evening in the Burley Avenue area and booked into the Fayette County Detention Center with no listed bond at the time.
Second-degree assault in Kentucky typically involves allegations of serious physical injury or the use of a dangerous instrument. The charge carries a potential prison sentence of five to ten years if convicted. Miniard filed in December to challenge incumbent council member Whitney Elliott Baxter in the May primary, adding extra attention to the case as the campaign cycle ramps up.
The arrest is the latest entry in a long record of legal troubles tied to Miniard, who has previously run unsuccessfully for multiple offices and faced past assault and threatening charges. Court proceedings in the new case will determine whether he can remain an active candidate as the race moves forward.
Police officer suspended, others disciplined after council review
Police accountability was in the spotlight at a recent meeting of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council. Council members approved three disciplinary actions involving city public safety employees, including a one-day suspension without pay for Officer Caleb Crony.
An internal investigation found Crony repeatedly failed to communicate professionally with residents and struggled to de-escalate encounters, both on and off duty. Police Chief Lawrence Weathers told council members the officer had accumulated several performance issues over recent months. Alongside the suspension, the department plans additional coaching and retraining.
Another Lexington officer received a written reprimand and retraining over policy and legal knowledge, while a fire department lieutenant was reprimanded for attendance violations. Council members said the cases underscored expectations for professionalism across public safety agencies.
School events offer a calmer note after winter disruptions
After an extended stretch of weather-related closures earlier this month, Fayette County Public Schools are leaning back into routine with a full slate of mid-February events.
The district calendar highlights family-focused activities such as this evening’s “Roots to Readiness” event and campus tours, including a scheduled tour at Harrison Elementary. District leaders are also promoting upcoming celebrations of the 100th day of school and showcasing student achievements in activities like cheerleading, speech competitions, and business clubs.
Officials say these events are part of efforts to reconnect families and students following the long winter break in instruction, and to keep attention on academics and enrichment as the second half of the school year gets underway.
Looking ahead at City Hall
City government watchers are also eyeing upcoming council meetings later this month, where budget implementation, public safety staffing, and neighborhood infrastructure remain ongoing topics. With at least one council race now complicated by criminal charges, the run-up to the 2026 local elections is likely to feature intensified debate over accountability and public trust.
