Lincoln’s 2026 council races take shape before filing deadline

Lincoln’s two 2026 City Council races are beginning to take shape, but the candidate field remains unsettled as the regular filing deadline approaches.

Voters will elect one council member from District 1 and one from District 2 in the November 3, 2026, general municipal election. Because Lincoln elects council members by district, only voters who live in each district will vote for that district’s seat.

Current candidate status by district

As of the City of Lincoln’s weekday-updated filing-status page checked July 28, Holly Andreatta is listed as Qualified in District 1. The city lists her nomination papers as received July 13, filed July 20, and qualified July 20.

Christine Colvin is listed in District 1 as Received Nomination Papers. Under the city’s definitions, that means the City Clerk’s Office issued her the nomination papers and related forms. It does not show that she has filed or qualified for the ballot.

District 2 lists Ben Brown, Daria (Darla) Gutierrez and Spencer Short as Received Nomination Papers. The city’s status list shows Brown’s papers were received July 14, Gutierrez’s July 22 and Short’s July 13.

No District 2 candidate is listed as qualified on the city page checked July 28.

Why the labels matter

The city separates the process into three stages. Received Nomination Papers means the candidate has been issued the paperwork to begin the process. Filed / Not Yet Qualified means the candidate has submitted the nomination documents, but ballot qualification is still pending. Qualified means the candidate has officially qualified and will appear on the ballot.

Receiving nomination papers does not guarantee that a candidate will submit them, complete the qualification process or appear on the November ballot. Additional candidates and qualification changes could still alter both races.

August 7 is the regular deadline

The regular nomination period opened July 13, 2026, and closes Friday, August 7, at 5 p.m. Placer County Elections says the period can extend through August 12 if an incumbent fails to file. That extension is conditional and does not apply automatically to every office or circumstance.

Placer County’s 2026 candidate guidelines identify Lincoln City Council Districts 1 and 2 as offices on the November 3 ballot. The City of Lincoln also provides an interactive district map for residents who need to confirm which council district includes their address.

For voters, the practical takeaway is that the emerging list should not be treated as final yet. Residents in Districts 1 and 2 can check the City of Lincoln’s weekday filing-status updates and the Placer County Elections calendar as the August 7 deadline approaches. The final field will depend on who submits nomination documents and who completes the qualification process.
