Little Elm Reviews Short-Term Rental Rules After Birthday-Party Shooting

Little Elm officials are reviewing possible code-enforcement action after a minor was shot during a birthday party at a short-term rental late Friday, July 17, according to CBS Texas and NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

Little Elm police reported gunfire and juveniles running through the neighborhood near White Oak Drive and White Pine Drive. One minor suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public, and follow-up reporting published July 20 said the investigation remained ongoing.

Why the rental setting matters

The gathering took place at a property being used as a short-term rental. Little Elm requires short-term-rental operators to register their properties with the town and comply with operating standards intended to protect neighborhood conditions and public safety.

The town’s short-term-rental rules prohibit using a registered rental primarily as a party venue. The rules also address occupancy, vehicles, registration, noise, and nuisance conditions, according to the town’s short-term-rental brochure.

Little Elm says its registration system gives the town a way to monitor short-term rentals and respond to complaints. Residents can use the town’s short-term-rental information and citizen-request resources to report suspected violations or other concerns.

What enforcement could involve

The town’s review is not the same as a final finding or penalty. The approved reporting and official records do not establish that the property owner had already received a citation, fine, suspension, or revocation as of July 28, 2026.

Under Little Elm Ordinance No. 1673, documented short-term-rental violations may lead to warnings or citations. The ordinance also provides procedures for suspending or revoking a registration when qualifying violations are established, including prohibited activities, occupancy or parking problems, nuisance conditions, or other violations covered by the town’s rules.

The ordinance includes an appeal process for certain formal town actions. That process would apply only if officials issue a denial, suspension, revocation, or another appealable decision; the available sources do not show that such an action had occurred in this case.
