Long Beach Daily Brief: Downtown Shooting, Pursuit Arrests, and Weekend Crime Update
Long Beach, CA – March 2, 2026 – A downtown shooting turned deadly, a stolen-car pursuit ended in the city, and police reported a teen hit in a shooting.
Long Beach started the week with a heavy public-safety headline downtown, plus new updates on weekend police activity and a fresh snapshot of how the Port is performing to start 2026.
Downtown shooting near a grand opening leaves 1 dead
Police say gunfire broke out Sunday afternoon near Pine Avenue and Broadway, close to a crowded grand opening event in the downtown area. Three people were taken to the hospital, and one of the victims later died. The scene triggered a major response, with parts of downtown temporarily locked down as detectives worked to piece together what happened.
Investigators have not publicly released a motive or detailed suspect information. For residents and visitors, the takeaway is simple: expect increased patrol attention in the area as the investigation continues.
Stolen-car pursuit ends in Long Beach with 2 arrests
In another high-visibility incident, a reported stolen vehicle led officers on a pursuit Saturday night that crossed multiple cities before ending in Long Beach. Police took two women into custody after the driver tried to run on foot and was caught in a nearby backyard.
LBPD: Teen treated after early-morning ‘hit shooting’
Separately, police reported that early Saturday morning a teenage boy arrived at a hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Investigators believe he was driving near Atlantic Avenue and Artesia Boulevard when someone in another vehicle opened fire. The teen drove himself for treatment, and detectives are still working to determine a motive and identify those responsible.
Port watch: Long Beach begins 2026 leading U.S. trade
The Port of Long Beach reported a strong start to the year, moving 847,765 container units in January and ranking as the nation’s busiest seaport for the month. Even with volumes down from last year’s unusually high January, port leaders pointed to available capacity and continued investment as shippers navigate ongoing trade uncertainty.
