Long Beach Daily Brief: Downtown Shooting, Fatal Crash, and Port Watch
Long Beach, CA – March 3, 2026 – A downtown shooting, a fatal pedestrian crash, and the latest port cargo report lead Tuesday’s local headlines.
Top story: Downtown shooting investigation
Police are investigating a triple shooting in downtown Long Beach near Pine Avenue that left one person dead and two others hospitalized. The gunfire was reported Sunday afternoon in the 200 block of Pine Avenue, with investigators saying the shooting occurred in a nearby parking structure. Two victims were reported in stable condition, and no arrests had been announced as of Tuesday.
The incident unfolded as large crowds gathered downtown for a restaurant opening nearby, prompting a fast lockdown and a heavy police presence as people scattered. Detectives are asking anyone with video, photos, or firsthand information from the area to share tips as they work to identify a suspect and determine a motive.
Fatal crash on Maine Avenue
A toddler died and two other pedestrians were injured Monday after a vehicle reversed onto a curb and struck three people in the 400 block of Maine Avenue, according to authorities. Investigators said the victims were sitting on the stairs of an apartment building when the SUV backed up and hit them.
Officers provided emergency aid and transported the toddler to a hospital, where she later died. The other two patients, an adult woman and a child, were taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police said the driver remained on scene and cooperated while the collision was investigated.
Blotter recap: two more violent incidents overnight
In a daily incident summary released Monday, police reported a separate hit shooting on West Spring Street that left an adult man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound Sunday night. Police also reported a stabbing on Locust Avenue early Monday that was later determined to be a domestic-violence incident, with the victim hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both investigations remain open, and officials noted that early details can change as detectives confirm witness accounts and evidence.
Port watch: January volumes keep Long Beach busy
On the economic front, port officials said the Port of Long Beach opened 2026 as the nation’s busiest seaport, posting its second-busiest January on record. The port reported moving 847,765 container units in January, down year-over-year, as imports dipped while exports edged up.
For Long Beach residents, that mix can show up in everything from local trucking traffic and rail activity to job hours across the goods-movement sector. Port leaders said they’re watching trade uncertainty closely but expect another active year.
