Los Angeles finalizes five-year agreement for Encino community compost hub

Los Angeles City Council has finalized a five-year agreement allowing LA Compost to operate and maintain a community compost hub at Sepulveda Garden Center in Encino. The council adopted the item forthwith on June 30, 2026, and the council file records final action on July 1.

The agreement covers the garden center at 16633 Magnolia Blvd. and includes one five-year extension option at the discretion of the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. LA Compost is responsible for operating the hub, maintaining it and paying related expenses. A city report states that the agreement will have no adverse impact on the Recreation and Parks general fund. The site is in Council District 4.

The council file does not set a regular operating schedule or launch date. LA Compost has publicly listed the location as having active compost-hub operations and announced a Family Fun Day for Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. The event is the next publicly announced activity at the site, but it does not establish a permanent schedule or confirm access requirements for residents. The agreement authorizes the operation at the named city garden center; it does not create a citywide curbside collection service.
