Los Angeles gas prices remain above $5 as national prices ease

Los Angeles-area gasoline remained above $5 per gallon in the latest weekly reading, even as the national average dipped below $4.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported an average of $5.564 per gallon for all-grades reformulated retail gasoline in the Los Angeles area for the week ending July 27, 2026. The EIA released the data July 28.

That regional average was about $1.565 higher than the national regular-gas average of $3.999 per gallon reported July 30 by The Associated Press, citing AAA data.

Los Angeles prices rose through July

The latest EIA series shows the Los Angeles-area average increasing during July. It rose from $5.205 per gallon on July 6 to $5.252 on July 13, $5.434 on July 20 and $5.564 on July 27.

That represents an increase of 35.9 cents per gallon from July 6 to July 27. The figure is a regional weekly average, not the price charged at every station in Los Angeles.

California’s comparable average was about $5.604 per gallon for the same period, slightly above the Los Angeles-area reading.

What the gap means locally

For Los Angeles drivers and commuters, the comparison shows that national fuel-price relief had not yet brought the local regional average below $5. Vehicle-dependent businesses also face a higher local fuel benchmark than the national average when estimating the cost of regular travel, deliveries and service calls.

Individual prices can vary by station, neighborhood, fuel grade and timing. The EIA’s weekly Los Angeles measure and AAA’s national figure also come from different datasets and observation dates, so they should be used as comparisons rather than treated as identical measurements.

National prices moved lower

AP reported that the national average fell below $4 for the first time since March. Its account pointed to easing crude-oil costs while noting that refinery capacity remained a constraint affecting fuel markets.

Those national developments provide context for the lower U.S. average, but they do not change the latest Los Angeles-area reading: $5.564 per gallon for the week ending July 27.

The next EIA release for the weekly series is scheduled for August 4, 2026. Until then, drivers should treat the published Los Angeles figure as a regional benchmark, not a guaranteed station-level price.
