The two nonprofits say they plan to merge in the future, keeping the Harlem board in place while tapping into the YMCA’s larger network for staffing, planning, and finances.

For families who rely on the center for child care, youth sports, and after-school activities, day-to-day programs are expected to continue in the same buildings for now. Leaders describe the move as a way to stabilize the center after several challenging years and to protect a long-time community hub based in Machesney Park.

Village officials and YMCA leaders have also talked for years about opening a full YMCA branch in the village. This new partnership is being framed as a step that could eventually make that vision easier to achieve.

Harlem Huskies battle through tough stretch

On Friday night, the Harlem High School varsity boys basketball team fell 63–54 to Rockford East, continuing a run of tight games against strong opponents. Earlier in the week, the Huskies dropped contests to Hononegah and Sycamore, including a showcase matchup played at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

Despite the losses, recent box scores show balanced scoring and solid rebounding across the lineup. Business beat: Drive-thru coffee coming to 173 corridor

A fast-growing drive-thru coffee chain, 7 Brew, is preparing to open its first Rockford-area location along Illinois 173 in Machesney Park. The shop will be built on former parking lot space near the Kohl’s store, bringing a new stop for morning commuters and late-night drive-thru traffic on the busy corridor.

The project was announced in mid-January, but it remains a fresh topic as site work and permitting move forward. Village leaders have highlighted the coffee shop as one more sign that national brands see potential in the retail and restaurant cluster along 173.

Harlem Township continues to promote neighborhood parks such as Schoonmaker Park, Dennis Johnson Memorial Park, and the Rover Run Dog Park on Ventura Boulevard, giving residents options for a short winter walk or some off-leash time for their dogs. With sunrise now around 7:05 a.m. and sunset after 5:17 p.m., outdoor time is slowly getting easier to fit into the day.
