Manteca Advances $92 Million Police Headquarters Project
Manteca has moved the proposed new police headquarters forward with planning approval for an 8.07-acre site on South Main Street and a separate city appropriation for project review and inspection costs.
The Planning Commission approved site-plan and design review for the public-safety facility at 682 South Main Street. City planning documents identify the proposal as the Manteca Police Station Project, SPR-26-32.
The project has been publicly described as a roughly $92 million new police station. The planning approval is a significant step for the facility, but it is not a construction contract or a groundbreaking notice.
What the city approved
The Planning Commission’s action covered the project’s site plan and design review. The commission also found the project exempt from further environmental review under section 15183 of the California Environmental Quality Act guidelines.
The proposed facility would be built on the 8.07-acre property at 682 South Main Street. The city’s planning records identify the location as the future Manteca Police Department headquarters and public-safety facility.
Separately, City Council records authorized a $500,000 appropriation from the Government Facilities Fees Fund. The money is designated for consultant plan review and inspection costs associated with the new police headquarters.
That appropriation is for professional review and inspection work tied to the project. It is separate from the roughly $92 million public description of the overall police-station project.
Why the project matters
City documents link the need for additional or replacement police facilities to Manteca’s growth. The documents say population growth has increased demand for emergency services and that some areas have response times above the citywide average.
A new headquarters would therefore be more than a building project. It is intended to address the facilities and public-safety demands associated with a growing city, although the cited actions do not establish how the new building would change response times or service levels.
The project is also one of Manteca’s major capital projects highlighted at the city’s April 29 State of the City meeting, where the new police station was described as a $92 million undertaking.
