Mathiston water project advances with proposed wells, storage tank and pipe replacements

Mathiston advanced a proposed water-system improvement project by soliciting engineering-services proposals for a HUD Economic Development Initiative project. The town advertised the solicitation June 10, 2026, and set a June 15 deadline at 2 p.m. for proposals to be submitted to the town clerk’s office at 41 Mathis Drive.

The proposed project includes two new wells, a 100,000-gallon elevated water-storage tank, replacement of asbestos-cement water lines and replacement of existing meters with automated meter-reading equipment. The project description identifies the Town of Mathiston as the recipient and its municipal water system as the affected asset.

Mathiston’s congressional project description says the town has declined from two water wells to one functioning well and has no alternate water source. That leaves the community vulnerable if the remaining well fails. The proposed work is intended to add water-production capacity, storage and distribution reliability while modernizing meter reading.

The engineering procurement record shows the solicitation as closed but does not identify a selected engineering firm or an award amount. The congressional project description lists $10 million as the requested amount. Construction scope, timing and final funding remain subject to engineering, funding and implementation decisions. Any award or subsequent construction would be the next step in moving the proposal toward implementation.
