Mead drivers face fall work zones as ODOT advances Roosevelt Bridge replacement

Mead-area drivers should begin watching for Roosevelt Memorial Bridge project activity as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation advances plans for a new U.S. 70 crossing over Lake Texoma.

A July 6, 2026 Oklahoma Department of Transportation Transportation Commission agenda lists a $23,958,007 supplement to HNTB Corporation’s owner-representative contract for the Bryan-Marshall County project. The agenda identifies the work as contract CI-2526, Supplement 3.

The supplement covers engineering and project-support services, not the cost of building the bridge itself. The listed services include owner-representative support such as engineering coordination, construction management, inspection, design oversight and related work. The agenda lists the total engineering-contract value at $32,458,007 after the supplement.

The agenda item was presented for commission consideration. The July 6 agenda alone does not establish that the supplement received final approval, so it should not be described as a completed vote or final contract action.

Why Mead is affected

Mead is a town in Bryan County adjacent to U.S. Highway 70 and approximately six miles west of Durant, according to the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture. The town sits along the U.S. 70 corridor connecting the Mead area with Durant, Kingston and communities in Marshall County.

That makes the bridge project relevant to Mead residents, commuters, freight operators and businesses using the corridor for work, deliveries, shopping, services and travel around Lake Texoma. The bridge replacement is outside Mead’s municipal boundary, but changes on U.S. 70 can still affect trip planning and commercial movement through the area.

What drivers should expect

The Roosevelt Bridge project website anticipates preparation, investigation and site work during summer 2026, with major construction expected to begin in fall 2026. Those dates are projected milestones rather than guaranteed completion dates.

The planned replacement would be a new four-lane bridge built south of the existing Roosevelt Memorial Bridge. Project information says the existing bridge is expected to remain open during most construction, but drivers may encounter work zones, lane shifts and reduced speeds near the project.

KXII’s driver explainer likewise reported that traffic is expected to remain on the existing bridge and causeway for most of the construction period while the new bridge is built nearby.

Schedule remains tentative

The project website identifies late 2029 as the tentative target for completing construction and opening the four-lane U.S. 70 crossing. That timing could change as design, permitting and construction progress.

For now, Mead-area travelers should treat summer preparation work and anticipated fall construction as the next milestones to watch. The existing crossing is expected to remain available during most of the project, but drivers should plan for changing traffic controls and slower travel near the work zone.
