Cold Front Brings Freezing Temperatures to Melbourne
Melbourne, FL — January 29, 2026 — A significant cold front has descended upon the Melbourne area, bringing sub-freezing temperatures and wind chills as low as 23°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective until 9:00 AM EST today. Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold, including dressing in layers and protecting sensitive plants from frost damage.
Cold Weather Shelters Activated
In response to the cold snap, local shelters have been activated to assist those in need. The Lifepointe Church shelter has been operating for 12 days this year, with all 60-plus beds filled. Other shelters in the area include Matthew’s Hope and the Sharing Center of Central Brevard in Cocoa, and Providence Connects in Melbourne. The Brevard Homeless Coalition is also seeking donations such as bus passes, grocery store gift cards, and cold-weather items to help people stay warm.
Upcoming Space Coast Food & Wine Festival
Looking ahead, the Space Coast Food & Wine Festival is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The event will take place on Melbourne Avenue and in the vacant parking lot, formerly known as the SunTrust lot, located between New Haven Avenue and Melbourne Avenue. Road closures are expected, with Melbourne Avenue between Melbourne Court and Front Street closing on January 30 at 8:00 AM and reopening at 6:00 AM on Sunday, February 1. Parking will be available at a fee of $15.00 per vehicle in the City-owned public parking garage and the parking lot east of the Florida East Coast Railway, between Strawbridge Avenue and Palmetto Avenue.
Traffic Advisories in Effect
Residents should be aware of several traffic advisories in effect today. The westbound lane of Fee Avenue at the intersection with Waverly Place will be closed from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Additionally, the center and left eastbound lanes of Lake Washington Road at the intersection with Croton Road will be closed during the same hours. A nighttime lane closure is also scheduled on Babcock Street at the intersection with W. Strawbridge Avenue, with the left southbound lane closed from 9:00 PM tonight until 6:00 AM on Friday, January 30.
