Memphis Daily Local Headlines: Blue Alert, Nutbush fire, library referendum
Memphis, TN – February 27, 2026 – A wounded MPD officer, a serious Nutbush house fire, a library-worker referendum, and a POST decertification update.
1) Blue Alert after Memphis officer shooting
Authorities issued a statewide Blue Alert after a Memphis police officer was shot Thursday night, Feb. 26, during what officials described as a traffic-stop encounter in the Parkway Village area. The officer was taken to the hospital with critical injuries as a large law enforcement presence formed along South Perkins Road and near Regional One.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Danell Maxwell, is wanted on an attempted first-degree murder warrant and was still being sought as of early Friday. Investigators urged the public not to approach him and to report tips directly to law enforcement.
2) Nutbush house fire sends two to the hospital
Two people were hospitalized after an early-morning house fire Thursday, Feb. 26, on Hazelwood Avenue in the Nutbush neighborhood. Fire crews said one person was in critical condition and another had non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said the home did not have working smoke detectors, and the fire was determined to be accidental, linked to an electrical outlet. The incident is a fresh reminder to test alarms and replace batteries regularly.
3) Library workers’ job protections headed to voters
Memphis City Council approved an ordinance this week to put a referendum before voters on whether Memphis Public Library employees should be covered by the city’s civil service system. Supporters say the change would bring clearer job protections, standardized hiring rules, and a formal grievance process.
If the measure appears on the ballot and passes, library positions would shift away from their current exempt classification under the city charter.
4) Two former Memphis officers decertified
In a separate public-safety accountability development, Tennessee’s POST Commission voted to decertify two former Memphis police officers, barring them from serving as officers in the state. The cases involved allegations ranging from failures to meet employment requirements to conduct issues described in the commission’s proceedings.
