Riverfront Expansion, School Audit Findings Lead Memphis Headlines
Memphis, TN – April 2, 2026 – Riverfront upgrades move ahead as a state audit flags school finance issues and City Council tackles infrastructure matters.
Memphis is seeing movement on several major public fronts this week, from riverfront investment to school oversight and infrastructure planning.
Riverfront Greenbelt Expansion Breaks Ground
City leaders and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers broke ground this week on a $6 million expansion of the Greenbelt riverfront area in Downtown Memphis.
The project will add new docking space for passenger riverboats along the Mississippi River, strengthening Memphis’ position as a cruise stop and tourism destination. Half of the funding comes from federal dollars, with the City of Memphis providing a $3 million local match.
Officials say the expansion is designed to boost economic activity while improving public access to the riverfront.
State Audit Flags Memphis-Shelby County Schools
A newly released audit from the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office identified financial management concerns within Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The findings were described as consistent with potential waste or abuse, though the total questioned amount represents less than 1% of the district’s operating budget over the reviewed period.
State officials cited gaps in oversight and documentation. District leaders pointed to leadership turnover and long-term structural challenges following the historic merger of city and county systems more than a decade ago.
The findings are expected to fuel ongoing discussions about governance, accountability, and funding stability for Tennessee’s largest school district.
City Council Reviews Infrastructure Agenda
The Memphis City Council met Wednesday evening with infrastructure and capital planning among the key topics. Committees continue reviewing project priorities as the city advances through its fiscal year, including street improvements and public works planning.
With major riverfront investment underway and scrutiny on school finances, city leaders are balancing economic development efforts with oversight and long-term budgeting decisions.
