City facility plan takes another step

The city is continuing work on a long-range municipal facility plan following the 2023 closure of City Hall. The proposal centers on building a new Public Safety and Maintenance Facility on the existing City Hall and Public Works site, along with acquiring a nearby commercial office building for administrative services.

The office building at 9655 SE 36th Street is about 22,000 square feet and would be purchased for just over $9 million through an agreed eminent domain process. City staff say the space would eventually house Community Planning and Development, Public Works engineering teams, and Youth and Family Services, replacing aging facilities while avoiding new taxes by relying mostly on existing cash reserves.

Council and school board meet on shared challenges

On Thursday evening, the City Council and Mercer Island School Board held a special joint hybrid meeting at the district’s administration building. The agenda focused on shared building infrastructure issues, including aging facilities on both the city and school sides, and how to plan for long-term capital needs.

Leaders also reviewed current enrollment trends and discussed 2026 state legislative priorities. That conversation is expected to guide how the city and district advocate together in Olympia for funding that supports facilities, transportation, and student services.

MIHS orchestra students earn All-State spots

Mercer Island High School reported that a record 11 orchestra students have been selected for the 2026 Washington All-State Honor Ensembles. Students earned their places through a blind audition process that draws applicants from across the state.

The selected musicians will travel to Tacoma in late May to rehearse and perform with other top student players. School leaders say the recognition highlights both the strength of the orchestra program and the level of commitment students and families have invested in music education on the Island.
