MPS budget crunch puts teacher raises on the table
Milwaukee Public Schools leaders are warning that a $46 million budget hole could force tough choices for the 2026-27 school year. One option under discussion: delaying some or all of teachers’ inflationary pay increases that would normally start July 1.
District leadership has floated pushing the raises to January 1, 2027, a move they say could save as much as $20 million. Teachers and union leaders pushed back during a public budget meeting this week, arguing the plan shifts the burden to frontline staff. More community feedback sessions are scheduled before formal budget hearings in mid-May, with a final budget due by the end of May.
$1.25M federal boost for buses and a key community center
Milwaukee County says it has secured $1.25 million in federal funds aimed at transit reliability and neighborhood gathering spaces. Of that total, $1 million is slated to help buy new buses for the Milwaukee County Transit System as older vehicles reach the end of their useful life.
Another $250,000 is planned for upgrades at the Kosciuszko Community Center, a long-running facility used for local programming and events. County officials say the projects were included in a fiscal year 2026 funding package adopted earlier this month.
MKE Airport begins the runway to its 100th anniversary
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is teeing up a yearlong community celebration ahead of its official centennial on October 5, 2026. Airport leaders say they’ll appear at events throughout 2026 and share historic milestones as the anniversary approaches.
Airport officials also emphasized that major airport projects are funded by user fees rather than local property taxes, and pointed to ongoing modernization work as they look to the next decade of travel demand.
