Milwaukee, WI — February 17, 2026 — From lifeguard hiring to youth tech training and major crime developments, here’s what’s shaping the city today.
County ramps up 2026 lifeguard hiring
Milwaukee County Parks is kicking off lifeguard recruitment and training for the 2026 summer season, with starting pay advertised in the upper $17-per-hour range. County officials say they are again offering free in-water training sessions from February through April, aiming to staff pools, water parks and other aquatic sites across the system.
The lifeguard corps has been rebuilding after several years of shortages, and the county is pitching the jobs as a first step into public safety, health care, and recreation careers. Applicants must complete a multi-week swim and rescue course, pass a civil service exam, and then move on to additional emergency medical training before being assigned to a facility.
Youth get new pathways into AI and tech careers
Local workforce partners are expanding programs that prepare Milwaukee teens and young adults for technology-focused careers. A new AI-focused youth initiative, building on recent collaborations between local employers and community groups, is highlighting artificial intelligence, data skills and digital literacy as core parts of the future workforce in the city.
These efforts sit alongside broader workforce projects that connect young people to apprenticeships, summer jobs and training in high-demand fields. Organizers say the goal is to ensure Milwaukee’s diverse neighborhoods share in the benefits of the region’s emerging tech and infrastructure investments.
Guilty plea in death of 5-year-old Prince McCree
A Milwaukee teen has pleaded guilty in the 2023 killing of 5-year-old Prince McCree, a case that shocked the city and helped spur changes to Wisconsin’s Amber Alert law. Prosecutors say the plea means there will be no trial, and a sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June.
Prince disappeared from his neighborhood near West Vliet Street in October 2023. His case led lawmakers to approve the “Prince Act,” which gives authorities more flexibility to issue Amber Alerts even when there is no suspect or vehicle description. Community advocates say the guilty plea offers a measure of accountability but stress that long-term support for children and families remains critical.
Weekend violence leaves two dead, others injured
Milwaukee police are investigating multiple incidents of gun violence and a deadly crash over the weekend. A Sunday evening shooting on the city’s north side left two men, ages 24 and 28, dead at the scene. Police say they are not currently seeking additional suspects in that case.
In a separate series of early-morning incidents, two men were wounded in unrelated shootings, and a high-speed single-vehicle crash on the south side killed one person and critically injured another. Investigators are asking witnesses to come forward as they work to piece together what happened.
