County approves new shelter funding as long-term plan remains unsettled
Stanislaus County leaders approved about $1.6 million in emergency-shelter support tied to state housing funds, with a sizable share headed to Modesto’s 182-bed low-barrier shelter downtown. The allocation includes $627,800 for the Modesto shelter and $427,800 for a shelter program in Turlock, alongside awards for two other local service providers and a small amount split among the group.
The vote comes as local agencies continue working on a more sustainable funding plan for the low-barrier shelter, which has faced uncertainty after major state homelessness dollars were not included in the current budget cycle. The approved money must be spent by June 30, 2027 under program rules.
Two popular river-area bridges close immediately after inspections
Stanislaus County Parks officials say the Basso Bridge and Old La Grange Bridge are closed to the public effective immediately after inspections identified critical maintenance needs. The county cited potential safety risks and said both bridges will remain closed until repairs are completed.
Ninth Street roundabouts move from idea to construction site
Construction is underway on a Modesto street project that will add three roundabouts along Ninth Street, drawing a mix of enthusiasm and pushback from nearby residents and commuters. City officials say the project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety, reduce the number of stoplights, and create more defined space for people walking and biking.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with drivers encouraged to watch for lane shifts, work zones, and changing traffic patterns as the work progresses.
