Modesto, CA — January 30, 2026 — The City of Modesto has been honored with the Audrey Nelson Community Development Award by the National Community Development Association (NCDA). This award recognizes the city’s efforts in transforming Jenny’s Place into a permanent supportive housing project for individuals and youth experiencing homelessness.
About Jenny’s Place
Jenny’s Place, which opened its doors in May 2025, converted a previously underutilized motel into 54 housing units. The project was a collaborative effort involving the City of Modesto, Upholdings, Stanislaus County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, and the Center for Human Services. Funding sources included the City of Modesto, Health Plan of San Joaquin, the State of California HomeKey Program, and Stanislaus County Community System of Care.

Jessica Hill, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Modesto, stated, “By maximizing our resources and leveraging strong partnerships in our community, Modesto has been able to turn a once underutilized motel into 54 housing units providing individuals with opportunities to build a sustainable and meaningful future.”
Looking Ahead
The award ceremony is scheduled for February 6, 2026, where Modesto will be recognized alongside six other recipients for their outstanding contributions to community development.
