Monterey Avenue Rehabilitation Begins in Palm Desert With Lane Closures Through October

Rehabilitation work on Monterey Avenue begins Monday, Aug. 3, in Palm Desert, with lane closures, slower travel and possible temporary driveway-access changes expected through mid-October.

The initial work area is northbound Monterey Avenue between Gerald Ford Drive and the Interstate 10 overpass. Additional improvements are planned in both directions between Dinah Shore Drive and Interstate 10.

Where work will begin

Drivers using northbound Monterey Avenue near Gerald Ford Drive and the Interstate 10 overpass should expect the first construction activity and allow extra time. Traffic conditions may change as work moves through the project area.

The expected schedule runs through mid-October 2026, but that timing is subject to construction conditions and should not be treated as a guaranteed completion date.

Repaving and infrastructure upgrades

The project includes roadway repaving along with upgrades to curbs, sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic signals. The work is intended to rehabilitate Monterey Avenue and related pedestrian and traffic infrastructure.

The City of Palm Desert’s Five Year Capital Improvement Plan lists the work as the Monterey & Gerald Ford Street Rehabilitation project and identifies $5,585,164 in SB1 Gas Tax funding for it. That capital-plan figure is a public funding allocation and is not presented here as a final construction contract amount.

What residents and businesses should expect

Lane closures and construction activity may slow trips along affected portions of Monterey Avenue. Nearby residents may hear nighttime construction noise, while businesses and property owners could experience temporary driveway-access changes depending on the work underway.

Not every lane or driveway will necessarily be closed at the same time. Access and traffic impacts are expected to vary by location and construction phase.

City guidance is to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and use caution in construction zones. Drivers should watch for changing conditions near active work areas beginning Aug. 3.
